This handsome ‘open book’ monument in bronze records facts about the family of John and Sarah Myers in Pine Grove Cemetery in Berwick, Pennsylvania (figure 1).

If you, like me, have difficulty working out the convention for listing relatives on his monument, it may stem from the odd decision to mix Latin and French. SO:

J. G. Myers was born to P. Myers and E. A. Mosier. The male parent was born (natus) as second son to D. Myers and S. Payne, the female parent (née) to J. Mosier and E. Beary. Analogously, S. A. Myers was born as eldest daughter to J. W. Seely and M. H. Raber. The male parent was born to J. Seely and L. S. Kuhn and the female parent to M. Raber and S. Hess.
