We had many magnificent sunsets during our recent trip to the Outer Banks. One of them I caught from (of all places) a viewing platform in the Outlet Stores Mall in Nags Head. My goal in going there was to find an unobstructed view rather than a bargain.

Figure 1. Scritchy-scratchy skies over Manteo, N.C. Photo: author.

I title this image scritchy-scratchy sky because of its texture, of course. It is precisely the texture of the sky with its many illuminated cirrus clouds that is the protagonist of this photo. To be sure, we got some astounding reds and pinks later, and I took a series of photos of the U.S. 64 bridge which runs from Nags Head over to the Dare County seat in Manteo that same evening. More on those in a later post.

For now, enjoy this study in gold with its criss-crossing diagonals of light and dark, the play of the light on the water, and the silhouettes of the landforms.
