21 November 2021, Nags Head, North Carolina. The early sunrise looked like this. Later, when the sun was up or nearly so but behind a cloud bank offshore, I captured a symphony in golds and blues with a silhouetted sandpiper as the protagonist (figure 1).
Living protagonists offer visual interest, and here I cropped way down (and from landscape to portrait orientation) so as to get the bird somewhere down in the rule of thirds. Still, I was most pleased with the molten gold of the sunrise reflected in the swash of the most recent wave.
